What is the CNA Exam?

The CNA (Certified Nursing Assistant) exam is a standardized test administered by the National Nurse Aide Assessment Program (NNAAP) to assess the competency of individuals seeking certification as nurse aides or nursing assistants. It consists of both written and practical components and is designed for entry-level candidates with little to no prior direct care experience. Passing the CNA exam is typically required for individuals to become certified and practice as nursing assistants in healthcare settings.

This exam is unique because there are 3 different providers (NNAAP, Prometric, and Headmaster). Each provider applies some slight differences to the exam. However, the exam tests the same concepts (regardless of who your provider is).

CNA Exam Providers by State

Before we dive into what is on each specific CNA exam, you need to figure out who the provider is for your state.

NNAAP: Alabama, Alaska, California, Colorado, District of Columbia, Georgia, Guam, Mariana Islands, Maryland, Mississippi, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, South Carolina, Virgin Islands, and Washington.

Prometric: Alabama, Connecticut, Delaware, Florida, Hawaii, Idaho, Louisiana, New Mexico, New York, Oklahoma, and Texas.

Headmaster: Arizona, Arkansas, California, Kentucky, Nevada, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Montana, New Jersey, North Dakota, Ohio, Oklahoma (LTC / HHA), Oregon, South Dakota, Tennessee, Utah, Wisconsin, and Wyoming.

Inside the CNA Exam: Sections, Number of Questions, and Score Interpretation

NNAAP CNA Exam: The NNAAP Written Test comprises 70 multiple-choice questions and has a time limit of 2 hours.

Prometric CNA Exam: The Prometric CNA exam written Test comprises 60 multiple-choice questions and has a time limit of 90 minutes.

Headmaster CNA Exam: The Headmaster CNA Exam Written Test comprises 60 multiple-choice questions and has a time limit of 60 minutes.

Passing scores for the exam will differ depending on the state. Aim for a score of 80% or higher, as most states generally set passing rates between 75% and 80%.
